Who is to blame?

The girl does not have a lot of time to play as she has to take care of her younger sister who gets sick frequently. Their father left them when he found out his wife had an incurable disease. Their neighbours also visit less than before. Their mother is unhappy. She learned that she had the disease when she went to a health centre for prenatal care. She took tablets to fight the disease, however they were not for her, they were for her baby in her womb. She could not continue to take them after delivery. Even though she took the medication, her younger daughter still became infected. Right now they both do not receive treatment because they are illegal residents and they are not also infected with tuberculosis. It is good that they were educated about the disease to prevent its spread to other people. However they now understand that without treatment they will have a short life. It creates a situation of helplessness and despair. Without treatment, many more will die, leaving behind many orphans. By MMT

These children’s parents have worked since they were married. Especially their father. He works every day. He has done so many different kinds of job. Even though he tries to improve his family’s life by working without rest, it is not enough. His family is deeply in dept. Their mother learned a little bit about how to prepare nutritious food, but she cannot manage that. She must make the meal with whatever arrives in the kitchen, depending on her husband’s income on that day. She needs to try to forget what she knows about nutrition while cooking or she will be too sad. They can eat a meal with meat only one or two times in a month. Most of the time they must be satisfied with vegetables instead. Other times they eat only chilli and salt with their rice. In the family, no one wants to think how many times they have eaten only chilli and salt with their rice. By MMT

The children living on the border need to work. However, their parents know that the benefit from their children’s work can not really solve their family’s problems. The children are growing up. Now is the time for them to go to school. But there is no school. School helps to make people smart. School helps to make people wise. School helps to make people clever enough to solve their problems. School is important for everyone. But many of the children who were born on the border do not have the chance to go to school. Fear is in mum’s eyes. Fear is in dad’s action. Fear is among the people in the community. We feel secure here in this camp. So many people go up and down the street outside. But we are terrified of the world out there. Mum said: “They are different. They are civilians and here is their place. Here is their country”. The place we are right now ...is not our country. Many days the trucks full of people drive by. It is very hard to look at the sad faces of those pressed inside the truck. Everyone on the outside looks to see if the truck contains a relative or friend, as those on the inside stare sadly out... Is it wrong to want to work, to study, to seek medical help, to send children to school? What is their crime? By MMT

We know that we are living illegally in this country as migrant workers, but we have no choice

When our feet touch the soil of a new country, our whole body senses that we are in a foreign land. We immediately feel fear, weakness, and insecurity. We are living here, but we have no official status. No one notices if we disappear, are murdered or raped. Having a work permit provides some security and makes us feel less afraid of the police, but this is expensive and most of us cannot afford it. Employers often take advantage of this situation and pay us less than the regular salary. But the income we make here is better than in Burma. It is difficult though, to balance our income and expenses. In our country, the civilians are powerless and those who do possess authority, abuse it. People in Burma have enough time to work. They have enough energy to work. But a job that gives them sufficient income and allows them to live a comfortable life does not exist over there. So, even though we know that this is not our home, we must stay. We live here, stateless and unsure of what the future holds for us. By MMT

Far away from this calm, flowing river, is my village. Has my house been burnt down? ... I am not sure. But I am certain that the soldiers have been there. When villagers hear that the soldiers are coming, they must run away as the soldiers will hunt them down and hurt them. Innocent villagers are often arrested, raped, and killed at the hands of government soldiers. After we crossed the river and arrived on this side, we knew we were safe, even though this is not our country. I feel sad since I have left my village. Fear, Hunger, and Fatigue

Normally children are energetic and easily excited. But the children who are born along the Thai-Burma border are not. When villagers hear news that Burmese soldiers are coming to attack their village, they run away and hide in the jungle. While in hiding, they are unable to find food regularly. Often they eat only rice with salt and chilli, but no curry. They also get sick easily, especially the children and the elderly. Malaria and diarrhoea are common illnesses, with no treatment available. But they are afraid to leave the jungle as long as the soldiers are near their village. Children are sensitive and easily impressed. The experience of having to run and hide in the jungle is vivid in their minds for a long time afterwards. They have trouble concentrating, and this affects their education. The fear, hunger and fatigue that they have endured have implications not only for today, but also for their future. By MMT

We have not played for three whole days. While hiding in the jungle, we had to control ourselves. We could not make any noise for fear of being heard by the government soldiers. Even coughing and sneezing were not allowed. There was one family with many young children that used to cry a lot. The villagers did not like having this family in the group, as they made it dangerous for all of us ... Now we can shout and jump and run around as much as we want. This place is safe. However, we do not have as much fun as before. There are not as many children to play with and we miss our friends from the village. By MMT

Tired

I was born in a small village in Burma’s green forests and high, blue mountains. Poverty became my friend early in life. I would watch over my cows, the heavy rain muffling the sound of their clappers. I had a bamboo hut for shelter, but no shoes for my feet. My feet hurt from walking miles on stones. Though I worked all the time, my income was never enough to support my family. So, we left our country to live in Thailand. Being an illegal person made it very difficult to get work. Soon I realised that I would never save enough to return home. Now I am old and have many grandchildren. My family and I live as strangers in a foreign land. I am still poor. My heart, my lungs, my body are all worn out. I am tired. By MMT

ထို႔အျပင္ ရန္ကုန္ၿမိဳ႕ရွိ ျပည္သူ႔ဥယ်ာဥ္၊ Happy World ေခတ္မီသဘာဝဥယ်ာဥ္၊ တိရိစၦာန္ဥယ်ာဥ္ႏွင့္ ကန္ေတာ္ႀကီး အပန္းေျဖဥယ်ာဥ္တို႔တြင္လည္း လာေရာက္အပန္းေျဖသူမ်ား၊ ေဆာ့ကစားသူမ်ားျဖင့္ စည္ကားခဲ့သည္ကို ေတြ႔ရသည္။

ထုိင္းႏုိင္ငံမွာ လာေရာက္ အလုပ္လုပ္ေနတဲ့ အိမ္နားနီးခ်င္းႏိုင္ငံေတြက ေရႊ႕ေျပာင္း အလုပ္သမားေတြမွာ ကူးစက္ေရာဂါရွိသူေတြ ေတာ္ေတာ္မ်ားမ်ား ေရာက္လာေနတာေၾကာင့္ ျမန္မာ၊ ကေမၻာဒီးယားနဲ႔ လာအိုႏုိင္ငံ နယ္စပ္ေတြနဲ႔နီးတဲ့ေနရာေတြက က်န္းမာေရး ဝန္ထမ္းေတြကို စစ္ေဆး ၾကပ္မတ္မႈေတြ ဖိဖိစီးစီးေဆာင္ရြက္ဖို႔ ထုိင္းက်န္းမာေရး အရာရွိေတြက သတိေပးေျပာဆိုလိုက္တဲ့ သတင္းတခုကို ၾကားသိလိုက္မယ္ထင္ပါတယ္။

လြန္ခဲ့တဲ့ႏွစ္မ်ားအတြင္း ထုိင္းႏုိင္ငံမွာ ျမန္မာေရႊ႕ေျပာင္းအလုပ္သမားေပါင္း ႏွစ္သန္းေက်ာ္ရွိတဲ့ အနက္ ႏွစ္ေသာင္းေက်ာ္မွာ ငွက္ဖ်ား၊ ဝက္သက္နဲ႔ တီဘီ ေရာဂါေတြရွိေနတာကို ေတြ႔ရတယ္လို႔ ထိုင္း ကူးစက္ေရာဂါ ကာကြယ္ေရးဆိုင္ရာ ေလ့လာေရးဌာနကလည္း ထုတ္ျပန္ထားခ်က္ကိုလည္း ကိုးကား ေဖာ္ျပထားပါေသးတယ္။

မဟာသႀကၤန္အတက္ေန႔ ျမင္ကြင္းမ်ား

ရန္ကုန္သႀကၤန္သည္ အတက္ေန႔တြင္ ယခင္ေန႔မ်ားထက္ ပိုမိုစည္ကားခဲ့သည္။ မ႑ပ္ႀကီးမ်ားရွိေသာ ကန္ေတာ္ႀကီး ကန္ပတ္လမ္း၊ ျပည္လမ္းႏွင့္ ကမၻာေအးေစတီလမ္းတို႔တြင္သာမက အျခားေနရာမ်ား၌လည္း စည္ကားခဲ့သည္။

"ဒီေန႔ သႀကၤန္ေနာက္ဆံုးေန႔မို႔ထင္တယ္ မနက္ပိုင္းကတည္းကစည္ေနတာ။ ညေနပိုင္းမွာ ေရပက္ခံထြက္တဲ့သူေတြ ပိုမ်ားလာၿပီး စည္လာတယ္။ ဆင္ေျခဖံုးရပ္ကြက္ေတြမွာဆိုရင္ မ႑ပ္မရွိဘဲနဲ႔ စည္တယ္။ ေနာက္ဆံုးေန႔လည္း ျဖစ္တယ္။ လံုၿခံဳေရးေတြလည္း အျပည့္ခ်ထားေတာ့ လူေတြစိတ္ခ်လက္ခ်နဲ႔ ေရကစားခဲ့ၾကတယ္ ထင္ပါတယ္။ ျမန္မာ့႐ိုးရာ အတာသႀကၤန္ကို ေအးေအးခ်မ္းခ်မ္း ေပ်ာ္ေပ်ာ္ရႊင္ရႊင္ ျဖတ္သန္းခဲ့ရတဲ့အတြက္ အားလံုးကို ေက်းဇူးတင္ပါတယ္"ဟု ကားျဖင့္ ေရပက္ခံထြက္သူတဦးက ေျပာပါသည္။

Each morning we wake up to the foul smell of garbage

We wake up to a foul smell, every morning. The morning garbage truck brings more valuable items than the one at noon. We collect plastic, glass and aluminium, whatever we can sell at the market. We also collect fish, meat, fruit and vegetables that don’t look too perished, to feed our families. We buy our drinking water because then we know it is safe to drink, but use the water from the well near the dump to cook and to wash. We know that no person should live in these conditions, breathing toxic fumes, walking and living on polluted soil, eating in the company of flies. But living at the local dump, far from the nearest town, has its benefits. We don’t need to worry about being arrested by the police. Living at this city’s dump is easier than living in our native land ... Burma. By MMT

I don’t have to worry about finding a snack

Every morning the truck comes and dumps many things, including toys, biscuits and fruit. It is like a market. There are a lot of animals, such as cows, dogs and flies. We play among them. When we run along the road, all the flies fly around us and become a voice. It sounds like music. There are more flies during the rainy season and we often have to eat our meal inside our mosquito net. I like to roll and lie in the rubbish, even though my mother does not like me doing this. I can play in the dump no more than four hours, as then I get a headache. I like this place even though it is full of rubbish. I just wish I didn’t get sick. By MMT
